UTZ is one of the largest programs for responsibly produced coffee, tea and cocoa in the world, working across all continents with leading brands and retailers, such as Mars, Ahold, IKEA, Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE), Migros, Tchibo and Nestlé.

UTZ is headquartered in Amsterdam and works closely with its partner networks in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The UTZ team in Côte d’Ivoire offers programs to improve sustainability in cocoa. Together with partners UTZ will implement and upscale Child Labor Monitoring and Remediation Systems (CLMRS) in Côte d’Ivoire and assess their effectiveness. Currently, UTZ is looking to recruit a:

 

Program Officer Child Labor – based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire


The Program Officer (PO) will become responsible for the further development and implementation of the UTZ child labor approach in Côte d’Ivoire towards the eradication of child labor in agriculture, including worst forms of forced child labor.

The PO will coordinate the implementation and monitoring of the Child Labor Monitoring and Remediation Systems (CLMRS)approach and build strategic alliances on CLMRS related issues in the cocoa sector in Côte d’Ivoire.

He/she contributes to strategy development and continuous improvement of sustainability issues in the cocoa supply chain. The PO reports to the UTZ West Africa Regional representative and works together with relevant theme specialists and project managers in Amsterdam. The position is based in Abidjan with frequent domestic travel, plus occasional travel in the region and to Amsterdam.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Improvement and upscaling of CLMRS implementation by UTZ members and partners  through the UTZ certification scheme

·         Co-develop core requirements, performance indicators and assurance methods for CLMRS

·         Co-develop, implement and monitor the use of UTZ training modules on CLMRS in the UTZ curricula

·         Visit and support UTZ members and partners in situ on the implementation of the CLMRS practices

·         Build strategic alliances to advance the UTZ child labor approach and represent UTZ at relevant events, networks and  platforms for cocoa sustainability in coordination with the regional representative

·         Assist in the coordination of a consistent and effective cross-organizational approach to contribute to strengthening the CLMRS approach by UTZ inCôte d‘Ivoire

·         Support the development and implementation of the UTZ annual plans, monitor and report on the program implementation and budget execution

·         Contribute to and develop project proposals with partners and local fundraising

·         Develop and maintain effective communication and relationships with UTZ members and partners as well as with others on the topic of child labor and related projects  


CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

·         Education in rural development/sociology or economy

·         Educational level at least BAC+04 years (master or engineer equivalent)

·         At least five years of work experience with child labor and/or forced labor mitigation and remediation strategies, preferably in the cocoa sector in Côte d’Ivoire

·         Proven track record in project development and implementation

·         Experience in setting up monitoring and evaluation systems 

·         Experience in communication through (social) media

·         Strong communicator, credible ambassador with diverse stakeholders (producers, traders, government)

·         Fluent in French, and workable proficiency in English (both written and verbal)

·         Ability and experience working independently yet in close coordination with colleagues worldwide

 

Employment is based upon a 40 hours/week, a one year contract with an option to extend. UTZ provides a dynamic and international working environment with an entrepreneurial and innovative approach.
