APPOINTMENT OF THE MONTH
Policy research organisation the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) has a new director, Andrew Norton. Norton’s most recent position was director of research at the Overseas Development Institute. He has more than 30 years’ experience in the sector, with field experience in western, eastern and southern Africa, south Asia and the Caribbean, as well as roles at the World Bank and the UK Department for International Development.
Based at IIED’s London headquarters, Norton will continue to work with outgoing director Camilla Toulmin at IIED as she takes on a senior fellow role. “At IIED, we have always believed in getting our hands dirty by listening to and engaging with people to try to find solutions to difficult problems,” says Toulmin. “I believe Andrew's deep understanding and engagement for the issues we work on will give the institute great momentum as it navigates the post-2015 agenda.”
Norton says: “The urgent challenges of bringing the world to zero net greenhouse gas emissions while empowering the world's poorest people to transform their lives will profoundly change the way we think about development.”
The World Resources Institute (WRI) has hired Natalie Elwell as its first senior gender adviser. Elwell will work with staff to embed a consistent gender perspective across WRI’s programmes and within the institute. She joins from USAid, where she served as senior adviser for gender and environment.
“Improving gender balance and equity, especially for women, are at the core of international development and sustainability and Natalie will provide leadership to further integrate a focus on gender across our programmes,” says Mark Robinson, global director, governance.
Elwell, who has an MA in sustainable development from the SIT Graduate Institute in Vermont, started out as a Peace Corps volunteer in Moldova in 1994. Her work on gender issues began in Moldova, where she initiated and facilitated a “women in development” group. She is also a founding board member of Groundswell International, a partnership of local NGOs and resource experts in Africa, Asia and LAC working to strengthen rural communities to build healthy farming and food systems from the bottom up.
Before joining USAid in 2009, Elwell was the associate vice-president for gender equity at World Neighbors.
“WRI can play a valuable role in incorporating a gender lens across its research and projects,” says Elwell. “I am excited to be joining this extraordinary group of experts to help make women’s empowerment a fully integrated part of WRI’s work.”
Denmark’s Lise Kingo will succeed Georg Kell as executive director of the UN Global Compact. Kingo, who assumes the role on 1 September, was most recently chief of staff, executive vice-president and member of the executive management at pharmaceutical group Novo Nordisk. The UN Global Compact is the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative.
Sedex Global, the non-profit membership organisation dedicated to improving global supply chains, has appointed Jonathan Ivelaw-Chapman as its new chief executive. A Sedex non-executive board director since 2013, Ivelaw-Chapman is an expert in corporate technology, large-scale data analytics and operational general management. Companies he has worked with include SAP, Centrica, Deutsche Telekom, GlaxoSmithKline, Rexam and Emcor.
Eleanor Turner is the new head of corporate responsibility at insurer Prudential UK & Europe. She was previously a senior consultant at Salter Baxter, a leading sustainability strategy and communications agency.
Judith F Greenwood has been appointed executive director of the newly formed CHS Alliance. The Alliance is the result of a merger between People In Aid and HAP International. Greenwood was formerly head of the people management programme at the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva.
Mark Robertson has joined the ICTI Care Foundation as director of communications and stakeholder outreach. ICTI is an ethical trade/certification programme working with retailers to improve supply chain sustainability in the global toy, entertainment and electronics industry. Robertson, who was formerly head of marketing and communications at Sedex, will be working with Sedex’s former CEO, Carmel Giblin, who moved to ICTI earlier this year.
The Carbon Trade Exchange (CTX) has appointed two key executives, Michael MacGregor and Daniel Scarbrough. MacGregor joins as chief strategy officer. Prior to CTX, he was managing director at Climate Exchange. Scarbrough will take on the role of president of CTX USA. He is a former senior vice-president of Chicago Climate Futures Exchange at Climate Exchange and ICE. Both will also join the board of directors.
Andrew Hudson is to become Crisis Action’s new executive director, effective September 2015. He has held many positions at Crisis Action, including New York director and deputy executive director. Most recently he has been acting executive director during Gemma Mortensen’s maternity leave.
The Global Green Growth Institute, an intergovernmental organisation founded to support and promote green growth, has appointed Mahua Acharya as assistant director-general and head of the knowledge solutions division. Acharya is currently managing director at C-Quest Capital LLC, a carbon finance business that uses carbon credits to bring investment capital to social welfare projects in developing countries.
Environmental consultancy Delta-Simons has hired Jess Smith as sustainability adviser and consultant. She joins from Lincolnshire County Council’s sustainability team.
Adam Bows has joined the environmental sustainability team at University of Oxford Estate Services in the new role of sustainable transport manager. He previously held a similar position with Dorset County Council.
Commercial property consultant Bilfinger GVA has hired Jon Gibson as an associate within its sustainability team. He was previously with JLL’s upstream sustainability team.
