CDC, the UK’s development finance institution, has appointed Diana Noble as its new chief executive officer. Noble has had a long career in international investment and was most recently executive vice-president at the Clinton Foundation Health Access Initiative. In this role she was responsible for teams supporting the government scale-up of access to HIV/Aids treatment in 43 countries including much of sub-Saharan Africa.

Following the announcement in May 2011 of the CDC’s new business plan, Noble will be leading the company as it places an increased emphasis on the poorest regions of sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia.

Andrew Mitchell, the UK secretary of state for international development, says: “Diana Noble’s considerable expertise and passion will help CDC to reach its full potential. This is one of the most important and exciting jobs in the fight against poverty. Under her leadership, CDC has the chance to nurture thousands of promising businesses in the poorest parts of the world, helping people to pull themselves out of poverty and boosting economic growth.”

Manfred Pülm has been appointed the new sustainability coordinator for the UNIVEG Group. Pülm was previously at German organic specialist Lehmann Natur GmbH, where he served for five years as the head of quality management. In his new position, Pülm will be responsible for improving the sustainability of the company's fruit and vegetable business and for the further development of its organic quality management systems.  

PR consultant Fishburn Hedges has hired Phil Drew as a senior consultant. Drew will advise clients on sustainability issues ahead of the government’s planned roll out of the Green Deal next year. Drew was formerly head of communications for Climate Week.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has made Dr Christopher Elias president of the foundation’s global development programme. Elias is currently president and chief executive officer of PATH, a Seattle-based international non-profit organisation dedicated to improving global health. In his new position, Elias will help lead the foundation’s efforts to support people in developing countries to overcome hunger, poverty and disease.  

The Australian Securities Exchange Group (ASX) has appointed Alan Cameron as the new chairman of the ASX corporate governance council. Cameron is a leading corporate governance authority and was chairman of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission from 1993 to 2000. His current roles include chairman of Hastings Funds Management Limited and deputy chancellor of the University of Sydney.

Children’s charity Easter Seals has elected Eileen Howard Boone, CVS Caremark’s senior vice-president of corporate communications and community relations, to its international board of directors. Howard Boone has served as an honorary member of Easter Seals’ international board of directors for the past year. As well as leading CVS Caremark’s public and media relations efforts, Howard Boone also oversees the organisation’s philanthropic programmes and the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust.    

ELGA Process Water, part of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, has appointed a new sustainability manager, Sofia Figueiredo. Figueiredo will work to develop the company’s sustainability strategy. She has four years’ experience in process design within the Veolia group.

TNT Express NV has appointed Jan Ernst de Groot as general counsel and managing director external affairs. His focus area will be legal and regulatory affairs including sustainable development. De Groot most recently served as managing director and member of the management board of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. He was also responsible for the successful development and implementation of KLM's sustainability strategy.

Charles Holliday, chairman of Bank of America, has been named as a co-chairman of the United Nations’ new high-level Sustainable Energy for All group set up by the secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon. Holliday will co-lead the group alongside Kandeh Yumkella, director-general of the UN Industrial Development Organization. 

Accountant and business advisory firm BDO LLP has appointed Simon Pringle as head of sustainability and climate change. The creation of the practice follows the firm’s decision earlier in the year to support evolving client demand through the development of a robust set of sustainability services. It also reflects the impact that energy, environment and climate change regulations are having on the mid cap market. 

Two new directors have been elected to the board of UKSIF, the membership network for sustainable and responsible financial services. Geoff Burnand is chief investment officer at Charity Bank, and Adam Frost is head of governance and social and environmental research at Sarasin & Partners.  

The Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) has hired Andrei Marcu as a senior adviser and head of the CEPS Carbon Market Forum. Marcu has been deeply involved in policy questions related to energy, climate change and carbon markets both at the EU and international level. He was founder and CEO of the International Emissions Trading Association, CEO of BlueNext and head of regulatory affairs in Mercuria.
