WSP Environment and Energy has appointed Barbara Hudec as a director and head of land restoration and ground engineering services in Germany. Hudec joins from URS in Germany, where she was a director leading their soil and groundwater team.

Mark Gold has become associate director at UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. The former president of non-profit environmental group Heal the Bay, Gold will be responsible for guiding the institute’s engagement with government agencies, policymakers and the environmental community, as well as helping to build the institute’s education, research and public outreach programme.

Following Chris Huhne’s resignation, Ed Davey has been named the new UK energy and climate change secretary.

Calvert Investments, a provider of sustainable and responsible investments, has promoted Anthony Eames to the position of senior vice-president. Eames will now lead Calvert’s third-party distribution efforts.

Global sustainability network BSR has appointed four new board members: Takashi Hatchoji, chairman, Hitachi America; Rachel Kyte, vice-president of sustainable development, World Bank; Anne-Marie Skov, group communications and CSR senior vice president, Carlsberg; and Robert Webb, chief human resources officer, Hyatt. The four will bring their broad industry perspectives to steer the organisation toward its mission of working with business to create a just and sustainable world.

Sustainable Growth Group has appointed Robert Boot as its group finance director. Boot has worked as a consultant to the group for the past three months and has previously worked as chairman, CEO and CFO of a diverse range of businesses.

M&G Investments has appointed Alex Jeffrey as the new chief executive of PRUPIM, its real estate fund management business. Jeffrey joins from MGPA, the independent private equity real estate investment advisory business, where he has held various senior roles over the past 13 years, including most recently global chief investment officer based in Singapore.

Appointments of the month

The Crown Estate has announced the appointment of Mark Gough as its new head of sustainability, and the appointment of Claudine Blamey as sustainability manager for its £5bn UK urban portfolio. Gough has extensive experience in the sustainability sector, and is currently global environmental manager at Reed Elsevier. He sits on a number of national and international sustainability groups, including the steering committee of the United Nations CEO Water Mandate. He has chaired the publishing sector’s environmental action group and is a teaching fellow at Birkbeck College. Blamey joins the Crown Estate from her position as head of sustainability at property company Segro. Between 2002 and 2008 she was corporate responsibility director at British Land, and prior to that she was environment manager at Honda UK.

Crown Estate director for sustainability Vivienne King says: “Mark and Claudine will be responsible for guiding the business in delivering the ambitions of our sustainability strategy, which goes to the heart of our business. This applies equally to tackling the impact of climate change, driving renewable and low carbon energy across our business and engagement in the communities in which we are represented.”

Steve Merridew has been appointed environmental design director and head of sustainability at BDP’s Manchester studio. He will support the environmental engineering director in leading the studio’s environmental design team and strengthen the environmental engineering leadership of the firm’s projects in the north of England. Merridew joined BDP in 2008, and leads on the environmental design of a number of key projects in the north-west of England, including the Enterprise South Liverpool Academy in Speke, the Manchester Town Hall Complex Transformation Project and the Nanjing Medical University in China.

Mark Varney has joined communications agency Corporate Culture as director of sustainable business. Varney previously spent seven years at the Fairtrade Foundation, leading its commercial engagement with manufacturers, brand owners and retailers in the food and beverage sector.

Sustainability East has appointed a climate change adaptation coordinator, Clare Merritt, to work with stakeholders in east of England. The role is a joint one with Anglia Ruskin University, as part of the Low Carbon KEEP project, and the work forms part of the Climate Change Skills Fund project on Developing Adaptation.

Prior to taking up this post, Merritt worked for the Government Office for the East England where she delivered policy relating to sustainable development, resource efficiency, planning, housing and education on behalf of a number of government departments.

ERM, a global sustainability consultancy, has announced that Ian Bailey is joining the company to head up its UK and Ireland division. Taking up the position of managing partner for the region, Bailey will become a member of ERM’s global senior leadership team before the end of March. With over 25 years’ experience, Bailey is a recognised leader in the sustainability field.
