Sustainable tourism, green buildings, circular economy and climate-smart agriculture will be key topics in Ethical Corporation in 2019

Ethical Corporation, the leading global publisher on corporate sustainability, has published a combined editorial and events calendar for 2019.

Reflecting the key challenges and opportunities faced by business, the in-depth magazine briefings will ensure subscribers receive feature analysis, case studies, expert commentary and insights on the issues affecting business.

An expert team of independent journalists from across the globe will produce in-depth briefings on stepping up to a 1.5-degree world, sustainability in the built environment, how companies are responding to the refugee crisis, the future of food, responsible tech and much more.

Sustainable tourism

What are the hotels industry, the cruise sector, the package holiday industry and airlines doing to address their significant environmental and social impacts and reduce operational and reputational risk in their supply chains?

This in-depth briefing will look at impacts such as over-tourism, plastics waste, water extraction and pollution, CO2 emissions and dependency on water-stress materials such as cotton. In the case of airlines, it will look at use of alternative fuels and offsetting.

Saving our oceans

Oceans are on the brink of irreversible damage. This briefing outlines how companies and investors can contribute to restoring the health of oceans, addressing plastics waste, over-fishing and pollution.

MARCH

Stepping up to a 1.5-degree world – full issue focus

The March issue will be a full issue-focus on how companies and investors are stepping up their action and ambition to meet the 1.5-degree target amid new evidence from the UN that a 2-degree rise in temperatures will not avert dangerous climate change.

The issue will look at how companies are implementing the Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosure recommendations, how investors are stepping up pressure through initiatives like Climate Action 100+, growing pressure on US insurance companies and pension funds to join the movement to divest from fossil fuels, and growth in green bond market.

The briefing will also look at the extent to which companies are stepping up ambition of their Science Based Targets and RE100 commitments.

APRIL

Sustainability in the built environment – full issue focus

An in-depth look at the ambitious Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment launched by the World Green Building Council at September’s Global Climate Action Summit, in partnership with C40 and the Climate Group

Under the initiative, 22 cities, and four states and regions commit to enact regulations or policies that will require new buildings to be net zero carbon from 2030 onward, and for existing buildings to eliminate operational emissions by 2050.

Briefing will look at the innovation in technologies and financing that will be required to achieve zero carbon buildings – focusing on the multi-stakeholder partnerships between companies and cities.

It will also look at sustainability on water and waste and the built environment.

MAY

Circular economy – full issue-focus

The May issue will take a deep-dive on the progress on circular economy in plastics, the garment industry, electronics and the brewing industry. It will ask whether closed loop systems are possible, and the design thinking and finance required. Case studies on companies including Apple and ABInBev.

Also look at how cities in US are partnering to achieve zero-waste goals, how the Netherlands is aiming to become a fully circular economy by 2050, and the global battle against food waste

JUNE

Modern slavery and forced labour

Progress report on modern slavery legislation around the world and analysis of how successful the UK has been with its landmark legislation in tackling the practice.  

How big are the risks for and companies and how are those in the sectors at biggest risk tackling modern slavery? Use of blockchain and whistle-blowing platforms to provide transparency in supply chains.

How are investors responding? Look at impact of Corporate Human Rights Benchmark and Know the Chain on helping investment community wake up to human rights risks, also rise of faith-based investors.

How are companies responding to the refugee crisis?

What is the need and opportunities for companies such as Puma to proactively seek to bring refugees into their factories in host countries like Turkey, Jordan and in Ethiopia, which has a pioneering programme to integrate refugees into industrial parks.

Will also look at how companies like WeWork and Ben & Jerry’s are employing and training refugees in Europe and the US.

Looking at work of the Food and Land Use Coalition and Global Agri-business Alliance to make food system more sustainable despite rising demand to feed the world. The tech sector is seen as humanity’s best bet to bring about the radical transformation in business and consumer behaviour that will be required to meet the Paris Agreement and SDGs.

This briefing will look at the potential for technologies like AI, cloud computing, internet of things and blockchain to bring disruptive change, the companies that are leading on this, and the barriers that they face.

Women and tech

Companies that have more women on their boards have been shown to be more innovative, yet they are particularly under-represented in the tech sector. We will report on efforts to get more women into the tech sector to drive disruptive change

OCTOBER

Is “purpose” fit for purpose?

How do sustainability commitments made in the C-suite actually translate into action on the ground in an environment where fiduciary duty is still about making a profit for investors and long-term value creation is not rewarded.
