How should leaders react and respond to major ethical issues? The University of Southampton Management School will hold a one day conference on 30 May 2013 to discuss new models of responsible and sustainable leadership in the economic downturn.

Leading academics and professional managers from the public and private sectors will speak from experience, present inspirational case studies and lead skill-based workshops at Winchester Guildhall.

Traditionally, leadership in the business world has focused on profit and maximising shareholder value. In the 21st century, major crises including large-scale financial mismanagement, questionable labour practices, environmental disasters and issues of trust have prompted a radical rethink of priorities.

The role of individual leaders has come into the spotlight after high profile events such as the global banking collapse, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and the exploitation of child labour in developing countries in the manufacture of luxury goods. Meanwhile, the Occupy movements in London and New York have prompted high level debate into business ethics.

The University of Southampton Management School’s Centre for Relational Leadership has organised a thought-provoking one day conference to discuss the modern requirements for responsible and sustainable leadership.

Conference keynote speakers will address leading change responsibly, how leaders think about doing the right thing and what happens when they show respect to their followers. Workshop discussions will cover responsible leadership in practice, the role of social enterprises and mutuals and how leaders develop trust in teams.

Speakers include:

  • Dr Thomas Maak, Professor for Leadership and Responsibility in the Human Resource Management Department at ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain
  • Dr Jonathan Winterton, Professor of Employment at Toulouse Business School, France
  • Dr Karen Blakey, Senior Lecturer at Winchester Business School, University of Winchester
  • Mark Drewell, Chief Executive of the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative
  • Professor Nicholas Clarke, Professor of Organisational Behaviour & HRM at Southampton Management School
  • Dr Jamie Callaghan, Professor of Human Resource Development at the School of Education at Drexel University, USA

Workshops will be led by Dr Denise Baden and Dr Melanie Ashleigh from the Southampton Management School and consultant Judith Smyth.

The £90 fee for attendance includes lunch, refreshments and a post-conference networking reception at Winchester Guildhall.
